There are four major timber processors in or adjacent to the North East region. They are:

1. Carter Holt Harvey - Myrtleford

2. Australian Newsprint Mills - Albury

3. Monsbent, Benalla

4. Dominance (now Alpine MDF), Wangaratta

Other processing units include sawmills. The major timber processors listed use principally softwood timber. Carter Holt Harvey uses some hardwood timber for pulp milling. The products of these processing operations include:-

  • Sawn Timber/Structural Timber
  • Pulpwood
  • Pulp
  • Medium Density

2. Value of Production to the Region.

According to updated estimates from the Log Haulage Report 1995 the combined value of timber production and processing is $213 million.

The number of people employed directly in the industry is 1000.

Clearly the timber industry, production and processing is a significant contributor to rural and regional economies through employment income and through flow on effects particularly in the transport industry.
