1. Description of Product:

Timber and timber products including sawlogs, veneer and pulpwood.

2. Location of the Industry:

The plantation industry is located in the north east region to the east of the Hume Freeway, with major plantations in the Shelley area, Bright, Myrtleford, Merriang region and at Warrenbayne. 24% of Victoria's total softwood plantations are located in the North East.

Monsbent - Benalla

Dominance - Wangaratta.

The industry estimates the gross value of output of the softwood timber industry to be $213 million.

6. Production Trends Over the Next Five Years:

a. Projected:

By the year 2010, the industry projects production of 1-2 million m3 of timber ie a 2-3 fold increase.

b. Potential:

1. Opportunities exists in the timber industry based on strong export demand, particularly from Asian markets.

2. Australia imports 3-4 times more wood and wood products than it exports.

Imports - approximately $2 billion.
Exports - approximately $500 million.

Thus there is a potential in the industry based on world demand and import substitution.
