Viticulture industry marketing activities

The region is actively marketed as a wine and food region. Most wineries within the region market their own products under their own names.

Viticulture industry strategic advantages and opportunities

    • Diverse climatic conditions which allow for a large range of grape types to be grown and consequently a variety of wine styles to be produced.
    • Developed tourism industry that presents agritourism opportunities to vineyards – supplementary source of income.
    • The reputation of the region of producing premium wines and its central location to the major wine markets of Sydney and Melbourne.
    • There is a view within the wine industry of the region that many smaller scale winemaking businesses are 'export ready' yet are unsure or do not have the funding to tap into the international wine market. This presents an opportunity for AlpValleys region wine cooperatives and associations to work together towards defining the relevant international wine market and establishing contacts in these countries. The AlpValleys region could be promoted as a premium wine region, creating a critical mass supply that would enable unique, smaller scale wine brands to be promoted and sold collectively under the region’s developed premium wine image.

Viticulture industry strategic disadvantages and impediments to growth

    • Concern of prices being driven down as a result of an oversupply and fierce competition amongst sellers. Those farmers solely involved in wine grape production also stated concerns over there being too many growers.
    • Small scale individual winemakers complain of poor marketing and a lack of regional selling power
    • The recent scarcity of water
    • Difficulty in obtaining capable labour
    • Peri urban development
