The co-operative was established in the Murray River town of
Cobram in 1950 when 14 dairy farmers pooled their resources to
form the Murray Valley Co-operative Dairy Products and Trading
Company Ltd. The company now has seven factories in Victoria along
with 26 trading stores, serving the rural community throughout
Victoria and NSW. The trading stores provide farmers with essential
farming requisites such as animal health care products, machine
parts, fertiliser and pasture stock.
MGC is located at Tangambalanga within Indigo Shire. The co operative
currently processes approximately 165 million litres of milk per
annum in the production of cheese, cream cheese and packaged milk.
All milk is sourced from the AlpValleys region.
240 milk producers supply the Kiewa factory. The Co-operative
employs 150 personnel with a further 10 casual employees. 8 co
operative owned tankers are used for transport of milk with local
and interstate freighters used to freight products daily to Melbourne
and four times per week to Sydney.
Approximately 1500 tonnes of cheese and cream cheese is exported
with 21,000 tonnes of packaged milk, natural cut cheese and cultures
products such as sour cream supplied to domestic markets. Some
product is delivered locally with the bulk going to distribution
centres in Melbourne.
