1. Description of Product:
Emu meat for human consumption.
Emu oil for therapeutic and domestic purposes.
Skins for leather products.
Breeding stock.
2. Location of the Industry:
Growers are located throughout the North East Region.

In Autumn extra labour is required for:
- laying and incubation.
- hatching.
- sexing.
4. Annual Production:
It is estimated there are 7,500 birds reaching maturity in the current season. Each bird provides 7 litres of oil, consequently the total production of oil is 52,500 litres.
5. Value of Product:
The value of oil per bird is $350, and the combined value of skin and meat is $100/bird, consequently the gross value of each bird is $450. For the industry, gross value of production in 1996 is projected to be $3,375,000. This estimate is based on project of market value from within the industry.
6. Production Trends Over the Next Five Years:
a. Projected:
On the basis on industry projection in 1996 there will be 7500 birds available for slaughter, in 1997, 16,000 birds and in 1998, 40,000 birds for slaughter. Production beyond 1998 will depend on processing and market development.
This industry has been expanding on the production side over recent years, further expansion and investment will be dependent on the establishment of abattoir facilities.
