1. Description of Product:

Tobacco leaf.

2. Location of the Industry:

Tobacco is grown in the fertile river valleys of the Ovens, Kiewa and King Rivers and their tributaries.

3. Employment and Labour Requirements:

a. Number of Producers:

There are 126 farms growing tobacco with up to 200 families deriving income from the growing of tobacco.

b. Number Regularly Employed:

200. Difficult to estimate accurately as there is some diversification in farms.

c. Harvest Requirements

Labour intensive period is at picking (January to May). Estimate 5 casuals

employed per farm during this period.

4. Annual Production:

1996 production - 3,976,000 kg of tobacco leaf.

5. Value of Product:

1996 price $5.76/kg.

Gross value of production = $22.9 million

6. Production Trends Over the Next Five Years:

a. Projected:

In the immediate future in terms of production levels no expansion is expected.
