Tobacco & Associated Farmers Co-operative

TAFCO

HISTORY

The Tobacco & Associated Farmers Co-operative was formed in 1987 to secure the supply of agricultural goods and merchandise for local farmers.

In the past 17 years we have faced many challenges which included tobacco quota reductions in 1993/94 which saw a loss of $12 million to the tobacco growing industry followed by industry deregulation.

TAFCO has demonstrated it's ability to grow as a business throughout these changing times.

In addition to operating an agricultural merchandising store, TAFCO co-ordinates a number of member training activities such as:

  • Farm Chemical User and Refresher Courses
  • Forklift & crane licencing
  • Managing Farm Safety
  • First Aid for Farmers

TAFCO also operates a branch of the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF). TAFCO Chairman, Colin McCormack, is the current President of the VFF Horticulture Group.

TAFCO has 380 members with a local investment of over $450,000 ($1.00 shares). Our annual turnover has increased to over $3.5 million. Over $1,000,000 has been distributed to members since TAFCO was formed in 1987 through rebates and dividends. This is one million dollars returned in our local community and not profit to any one individual or company.

TAFCO has a board of seven Directors voted by members annually.

TAFCO is a successful co-operative and demonstrates how local investment in business can work for the benefit of all. Local members retain profits of a successful business.

TAFCO has been recognised for excellence in accreditation winning the Agsafe National Excellence Award. The award recognises members of the agricultural and veterinary chemical industry who are leading the industry in Agsafe stewardship programs.
